Constitution? Which Constitution?  Democracy? Which Democracy?

12/24/2014

Picture
Our country's Constitution has been altered beyond recognition by a Supreme Court controlled by a crew of conservative appointees who are in essence, political time capsules put in place to accomplish a corporatist agenda.  Similarly, our "representatives" in Congress and the Senate who we elected to do our bidding are for the most part, representing the corporations and billionaires who own them and are ignoring us. Our founding fathers would be shocked and disgusted by the actions of every branch of what passes for democracy and government these days.

Ponder This: On Constitutional Rights (Revising A Previous Post)

Looking at the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision and subsequent related decisions (especially the Hobby Lobby decision) from my perspective reveals horrifying implications. Their contention is that corporations have the same Constitutional rights as people.   Furthermore, they contend that money is speech and there should be no limitations on free speech.   To add insult to injury, they seem to think that in some cases, corporations have religious rights that can be violated by godless government bureaucrats who have the nerve to insist that those corporations have the same legal obligations as any other business entity.

Taken at face value, one would think that the benevolent Supreme Court Injustices are just trying to extend the Constitutional benefits of mere mortals to every possible entity.   Hey, let's give that door and that doorknob the right of free speech or that washing machine the right to impose its religion on everything else.  The more the merrier, right? How about this pack of chewing gum that I'm carrying in my pocket?  It's been silent for far too long and should have the right to buy political ads on every TV network!  For that matter, it should have the right to have a day of rest on its Sabbath.

The way I see it, this new twisted, corrupt interpretation of the Constitution actually means that the U.S. Constitution only grants true free speech to those who have the money to pay for it and extends a super-set of its protections to various corporate entities with either deep pockets or the backing of right-wing organizations with an aggressive agenda!  The more money you have, the more political ads you can buy with no limitations.  If you have no money, you have no free speech.  If your ideology matches the Supreme Court's current conservative slant, you can endow your business with your religious fervor and refuse to pay for certain mandated health benefits that are the obligation of those godless businesses that don't go to church on Sunday and haven't been baptized!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, according to the current crop of Supreme Court Injustices, free speech isn’t free and your business can have a religion of its very own!  So get out your checkbooks and credit cards and send your business to Sunday school!  The founding fathers would be so proud!

Supreme Court Health Care Decision – We Can't pat ourselves on the back yet!

7/1/2012

Make no mistake about it, the recent favorable Supreme Court decisions on the Affordable Care Act are important because they allow what is just a baby step on the way to real health care reform to proceed.  Given the short attention span of the average voter, if the ACA was snuffed out by unfavorable Supreme Court decisions, health care would literally be a dead issue, as would the health of many uninsured Americans.  Our electeds would move on to other things and it would be business as usual for America's insurance corps.  Translation, we would return to the bad old days of people being turned down for policies due to preexisting conditions and to upwardly spiraling premium prices!

All of that being said, the ACA is far from a panacea.  The law does not guarantee health care for all and will still leave a number of people without coverage.  The individual mandate that has many conservatives and some of us on the left upset was originally a conservative idea suggested in 1989 by someone from the Heritage Foundation, a bastion of conservatism.  Most importantly, the law doesn't address what I feel is the main reason for constantly escalating health care costs, the corporate middlemen in the insurance and for profit hospital industries.  It also does nothing to stop pharmaceutical corporations who, in my opinion,  feel that the bill for their research and development for medicines that they market globally should be paid for by Americans in the form of the highest drug prices in the world.

From my perspective, a nationalized health care system that replaces the entrenched combination of insurance and for profit hospital special interests with a system of health care for all that also, by regulation, brings prescription drug prices down to what the rest of the world is paying, will be the only one that is cost effective and sustainable.  We can accomplish that by voting the corporate owned Republicans out of office, giving the Democrats a clear majority.  That would take away any excuse that corporate leased Democrats would have not to back universal health care.

Remember, health care for all should not be sacrificed in the name of profits for some!

America Needs Nationalized Healthcare, Not Mandates!

Does anyone remember the early days of the healthcare debate when the Republicans, right wing talk radio and Teabaggers were starting to hang the Term "Obamacare" on it?  That pressure made the President and many Democrats fold and reduce a plan that would have been all-inclusive and constitutionally airtight to a watered-down plan that may not withstand the tests of a Supreme Court that basically has a right wing majority.  You can hear what I have to say about it by visiting my Listen Here! page.

Worst Supreme Court Decision Ever!

1/21/2010

I'm sure the bloated mega corporations who now consider themselves the shadow government of the US are jumping with joy over today's Supreme Court decision.  Justice Roberts and  company have done something that can only happen in a Frankenstein movie; they brought corporations to life and gave them rights that used to only belong to flesh and blood people. Corporations are now constitutionally entitled to the right of free speech.

Laws that limit the amount of money a corporation can spend on political advertising no longer apply because the court says they restrict a corporation's right of free speech.  Corporations can now buy the politician of their choice by financing their campaign ads.  When politicians are bought and sold, a mere vote  means nothing.

Congratulations Supreme Court, you have done what no invading army has ever been able to do; you have tossed 233 years of American freedom into the circular file and turned the USA over to it's new rulers, the corporations.

Have you noticed that there's no one on Talk Radio who speaks for John and Jane Q. Public?  I want to change that situation.  When I go into the studio and get on the air, I say the things that you've always wanted to say.  The big corporate interests have their lobbyists, I want to be your voice.  Just think of me as your guy fighting for your interests.
